SAUSAGE AND GRAVY INGREDIENTS
Gather the following ingredients to make sausage and gravy:
- Ground Pork Sausage: Ground pork comes in various flavors, common types include mild, Italian and HOT. Choose your favorite or even mix up the flavors if you like.
- Butter & Flour: After the ground pork is cooked, butter and flour will be added to the skillet to create a roux to thicken the gravy
- Milk: Use whole milk for this recipe, as other milk alternatives may cause the gravy to have an odd flavor.
- Salt and Pepper
See recipe card for quantities.
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Grab a large cast iron skillet and follow the instructions below:
- Place the cast iron skillet on the stove top and heat over medium high. Once the skillet has warmed up, drop the ground pork sausage into the skillet. Break the sausage up with a wooden spatula. Brown the sausage until no longer pink. Drain most of the grease from the sausage.
- Drop the butter into the sausage. Stir until the butter is completely melted.
- Add the flour by sprinkling it over the top of the sausage. Stir until the sausage is well coated with the flour. Allow to simmer for around 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Slowly pour the milk over the sausage, mixing consistently until a smooth texture is formed, and the mixture comes to a boil and thickens. If the gravy is too thick for your liking, add additional milk as needed until your desired texture is met.
- Reduce to medium low heat. Simmer for an additional 2-4 minutes.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Serve the sausage gravy over biscuits or breakfast potatoes and enjoy!
NOTE: This gravy is meant to be on the thicker side. If it is too thick to your liking, slowly add in more milk until your desired thickness is met.
STORING GRAVY
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the regenerator for up to 2-3 days.
COMMON QUESTIONS
CAN SAUSAGE GRAVY BE MADE THE DAY BEFORE SERVING?
Yes, this sausage gravy is a great make ahead recipe. After cooking, simply store it in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, the gravy can either be reheated in the microwave or on the stove top on low heat.
WHAT ARE SOME ADDITIONAL SAUSAGE GRAVY ADD-INS AND TOPPINGS?
Sausage gravy already has a ton of flavor, but you may want to change things up occasionally. Diced peppers or onions can be cooked along with the sausage to make the gravy even more hardy. The sausage gravy can also be topped with bacon or green onions to add a bit of a crunch and another flavor element.
